In 1821, the German literary historian, critic, translator, poet, classical philologist, and Indologist August Wilhelm von Schlegel (1767–1845) designed Indian characters. Under the German scholar's supervision, the French engraver and type cutter Jean-Joseph Vibert (1763–1843) cut these characters into metal. Schlegel’s Devanagari typefaces formed the bedrock for the development of an entire scientific discipline—Indology—and were used for decades across Europe to print numerous publications containing texts in Sanskrit and other Indian languages.
